—  Heat and Storms - Dangerous Rip Currents - Tracking Beryl  —

Tropical Storm Beryl is moving across the Yucatan Peninsula today and will emerge into the Gulf of Mexico tonight. The storm has weakened due to its interaction with the Yucatan but has also taken a more northerly track. The forecast cone from the National Hurricane Center has shifted to account for this, and a landfall in Texas is looking likely Sunday night into Monday.

LOCAL IMPACTS - DANGEROUS SURF:

Impacts from Beryl will be felt elsewhere as well. Dangerous, life-threatening rip currents are expected today through Sunday along the Gulf Coast. Swimming is not recommended, and beach closures are possible. Be familiar with the local beach warning flag system. Double red flags indicate that the waters are closed, so do not enter the water!

Rip currents are the number one killer along the Gulf Coast, far exceeding any other weather-related hazard. Please be cautious at the beach this weekend!

A coastal flood advisory has also been issued for parts of the central Gulf Coast. Coastal flooding may occur due to higher than normal tides and wave run-up. Areas that typically experience coastal flooding should be monitored.

Nicholas Herboso is the newest member of the FOX10 StormTracker Team. He comes to FOX10 from the University of South Alabama, where he studied broadcast meteorology and minored in music. Nicholas is a native of Fairhope, AL, and is proud to call the Gulf Coast home. He was motivated to pursue a career in weather broadcasting after living through multiple hurricanes on the Gulf Coast and watching the coverage from local meteorologists like John Edd Thompson, especially after watching their coverage of the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons. Past extreme weather events got Nicholas interested in weather early on. For him, weather is a passion that he is excited to share with viewers.
