Professor Charles Bleiker has spent more than 20 years working with at-risk children. His expertise is in developing educational interventions for ethnically diverse young children in poverty. A professor in the College of Education, he has pioneered a preschool math program with at-risk, Hispanic 4-year olds based on a series of games that teach children foundational math concepts. Dr. Bleiker’s research shows that the “MathWaysPreK” program offers children roughly a six-month boost in number knowledge. He is now adapting the program so that parents can teach their own children. His work has been widely published in academic journals and supported with grants from the Department of Education, the Children’s Trust and the Department of Health and Human Services.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
