Invest 93L has strengthened, and at 5:00 pm, the National Hurricane Center classified it as the tenth tropical depression of the hurricane season. It is forecasted to intensify into Tropical Storm Idalia in the next few hours.
It will move very slowly over the next 48 hours between the Yucatan Peninsula and Cuba. Tropical storm conditions will be felt in parts of Quintana Roo and Yucatan in Mexico, as well as in Pinar del Río in Cuba. Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Isla Juventud, and Pinar del Río will experience deteriorating weather conditions from Saturday to Monday.
In the medium to long term, it is projected to move northward toward the state of Florida in the United States. The warm temperatures of the Gulf of Mexico will aid in its strengthening, and some models suggest it could reach as a Category 2 or 3 hurricane.
Interests in northern Florida, southern Georgia, and South Carolina should stay alert and begin preparations.
