Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is the largest, edible fruit native to the United States. This North American fruit grows in nearly every state east of the Mississippi. Pawpaw belongs to the same plant family as the custard-apple, sweetsop, ylang-ylang and soursop.

After a few decades of neglect, Americans are returning to this historic fruit. Some still seek it in the wild, but many others are bringing the pawpaw out of the woods and into their garden. The flavor of the pawpaw is often described as a cross between mango and banana, with a dense, custardy texture, the pawpaw is exceptional.

People have eaten pawpaw in North America for thousands of years. The leaves and fruit of this tree have provided medicine and food to Native Americans for centuries. They even used the tree’s fibrous inner bark for cordage and textiles. Pawpaw was important to the European colonists and pioneers who settled the country, especially as the frontier pushed westward.

Eating pawpaw helps your body metabolize the other food you eat. A cup of raw pawpaw provides about 10 percent of the vitamin B-6, thiamin, riboflavin, folate and niacin you need daily. It also contains one-half of the vitamin C you should get each day.
Unlike many tree fruits, paw paw is a rich source of minerals. Each cup provides about one-seventh of the magnesium, one-eighth of the potassium and one-tenth of the phosphorus you need each day. It also contains 1.35 milligrams of iron.

According to the "Journal of Natural Products," pawpaw extracts are one of the most potent herbal products discovered. Pawpaw may offer benefits to people with some forms of cancer. They found that breast cancer patients who took 200-milligram doses of paw paw extract for 5 weeks experienced inhibited growth of their tumors. University of Nebraska researchers, who published a paper in "Cancer Letters" in 2012, also concluded that pawpaw extract appeared to stop cancer from spreading and even to shrink existing tumors.

Pawpaw is also a satisfying fruit for people trying to lose weight or maintain their current weight. It is higher in fiber than an apple or a pear. Eating high-fiber food benefits your digestive system and adds bulk to your meal, making you feel fuller and more satisfied without taking in excess calories.

Pawpaw is eaten straight from the tree, or can be used in a variety of delicious recipes. Such as pawpaw ice cream, pawpaw nut bread and pudding.

Pawpaw Ice Cream

2 cups pawpaw pulp (or more, if you have it)
1 cup sugar
2 cups cream
2 cups milk
Combine the pawpaw and sugar. Stir in the cream and milk. Pour mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according the manufacturer’s directions.

So if you want to give paw paws a try, your local supermarket will not have them since they bruise easily and have a short shelf life. Traditionally, most Americans have gathered them from the wild. You can also look for this fruit at farmer's markets and specialty stores, including some online retailers, in the late summer or early autumn.

Now for a little known fact, At least two U.S. presidents favored paw paws: George Washington reportedly enjoyed them for dessert, and Thomas Jefferson was known to have grown paw paws at Monticello.
