Metadata for Data Management Professionals

African Data Management Community Forum 2021-06-24 Metadata for Data Management Professionals. Metadata is the new gold! We had an excellent webinar talking about Metadata Management professionals. We discussed the career path for metadata professionals, from Entry Level to Thought Leader. Using the DMBOK Metadata Context Diagram, we can describe the different metadata roles and expectations of the role, i.e. what deliverables can be delivered by a Metadata Job Level. Donna Burbank's "Metadata is the 5W&1H of Data" enumerates the different questions that metadata answers. George Firican's "Role of Metadata" categorises these questions that the different roles should be responsible for answering. An exciting observation arises when we use the role categorisation - Where is the questions and answers that address the Guidance role? I loved this question from Marc Nolte, CDMP, CDP, our favourite DAMA Calgary President: How does one become a Metadata Thought Leader? The answer is not straightforward, but it starts with CDMP Metadata Certification and then moves to the development of Knowledge, Skills and Competencies in metamodelling, metadata query languages (SPARQL), taxonomies, and ontologies.
