This video is about making a cute fairy town lamp using those cardboard tube you've been saving for no reason. For this project you'll only need cardboard tubes and paper clay (I use Das). It's pretty easy to make if you ask me, and the result can be awesome.
Step 1 - Cutting and Gluing
I start by cutting the tubes with the intention of making long curved cones. I used three or four tubes for each cone. It's all about cutting and twisting the carton. I glued them together with hot glue. After the cones are done I cut holes for windows. Be careful as the carton used for the tubes has two layers and cutting through both of them can be challenging. I didn't cut the doors all the way so I can have them slightly open.
Step 2 - Adding Paper Clay
Next step is of course adding the first layer of paper clay. If you're new here, the clay I usually use is "Das modelling material" because it has dimensional stability when it dries, which means it doesn't shrink like a regular air dry clay so it won't develop cracks around the cardboard, jars, plastic bottles or whatever I incorporate in the project. I first added a thin layer of paper clay. The only purpose of this first layer is adding rigidity to the cardboard so I wasn't focused on creating the final shape. However with the second layer I try to create the shape of the curved cones as good as I can. I take my time with the windows and door and try to achieve a smooth shape. I wasn't not worried about the little imperfections of the surface knowing I'll be sanding them later when the clay is dry.
Step 3 - Sanding
The final step is sanding. I wanted a smooth, ceramic-like finish so I took my time with the sanding of the cones. I used 150, 180 and 250 grit. You can go even further if you want them even smoother.
You can paint them if you want, I chose not to. I really like them white with the yellowish LED string lights inside.
