Hello all,
Welcome to a Victorian heritage train chase video. Today we head out west for the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre's highly anticipated Portland Weekender. This tour sees the return of a heritage train to Victoria's first European settlement since the early 2000s. The special was a three-day tour that began on Friday from their home base at Seymour. Travelling in daylight, they roll down the great dividing ranges onto the freight lines though Jacana and Brooklyn. They sprinted out west on the standard gauge mainline to Maroona for an evening run-around to prepare for the final leg south. The tour diverges off the mainline and trundles down the Portland branch through the night.
While in Portland, there were shuttles run for those in Hamilton on the Saturday, then they were run locally on the Sunday. With the sun at its apex, the train began their long trip back to Melbourne.
The tour saw the use of locomotive C501 "George Brown" and the recently acquired and reactivated S307 hauling a set of nine steel carriages.
In this video we firstly do a quick chase out west with the train from Spotswood, then rejoin the tour in Portland to capture the Sunday activities.
This video has been heavily compressed, with the uncut length being just over 55 minutes. A future director’s cut might be made available in the future, which will include the backing shots.

The train line to Portland is a branch that runs from Maroona. It was opened in 1877 on Victoria's broad gauge. The line was shared between passenger and freight services for numerous years. As passenger traffic dropped, the frequency of the service gradually decreased until the last service was run in September 1981 with a DRC-type railmotor. Freight continued on the line, with the line being standardised along with the Western Standard Gauge in 1995. Because of this, a branch line to Mount Gambier that branched off at Heywood was closed. Currently, the line is leased to ARTC as part of a 50-year contract to operate the line along with the Melbourne to Serviceton standard gauge line.
The Seymour Railway Heritage Centre or SRHC is one of the accredited mainline heritage train operators in Victoria. They primarily operate heritage diesel services around Victoria from their base in Seymour. There are various planned tours throughout the year and trains can be hired for special occasions.
