TENER QUE vs. HAY QUE (Which Should You Use?) - Learn Spanish. Today we will be looking at the differences between "Tener que" and "Hay Que." Many students struggle to know the difference between the two. In this video, I’ll be breaking that difference down as easy as possible.

To give you a quick overview, the reason why students have trouble with these phrases is because if you copy and paste both “tener que” and “hay que” over to google translate, you’re going to get the same answer.

Go ahead and do it, I’ll wait… You back? Okay great! Now the answer you probably got was “Must.” In general that’s what these verbs mean but there is a lot of nuance that distinguishes them. First we will cover tener que because that is much more common.

Tener que + infinitive is one way to express obligation or necessity. This expression can be translated as “someone has to do something.” Tener is conjugated according to the subject of the sentence. Here are some examples:

Yo tengo que sacar a mi perro.
(I have to take out my dog.)

Él tiene que limpiar su cuarto.
(He has to clean his room.)

Nosotros tenemos que despertarnos temprano.
(We have to wake up early.)

Notice how each of these is an obligation that is assigned to a subject. On the other hand, we have Hay Que + Infinitive. It’s always “Hay Que.” You don’t have to worry about conjugating according to the subject because there is NO subject when using “Hay Que.” It’s used when speaking in general of what must be done or what is necessary.

For example:

Hay que tener cuidado con el fuego.
(“One must be careful with fire.” Or “It is necessary to be careful with fire.”)

Hay que cocinar antes de la fiesta.
(“One must cook before the party.” Or “It is necessary to cook before the party.”)

Hay que lavarse las manos antes de comer.
(“One must wash their hands before eating.” Or “It is necessary to wash one's hands before eating.”)

As you can see, there is no subject in the above sentences. That is the main difference between tener que and haber que. Make sure you master these simple rules so you never get confused from these verbs again.
