Ralf Little pays heartbreaking tribute to Royle Family co-star Liz Smith after actress passes away aged 95

Devastating to lose two members of my second family in one awful year," he wrote
Tributes have come pouring in for beloved actress Liz Smith.

The Royle Family star, who played Nana in the hit comedy series, passed away aged 95, a spokesperson confirmed on Monday night.

Taking to Twitter shortly after the news broke, Liz's Royle Family co-star Ralf Little - who played Liz’s grandson Anthony Royle in the sitcom - paid his respects.

"Devastating to lose two members of my second family in one awful year. RIP Liz Smith. Goodbye Nana," he wrote.
As well as playing Nana, Liz starred in a number of other TV roles including Mrs Cropley in the Vicar of Dibley alongside Dawn French, and characters in Lark Rise to Candleford and Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Family.

The much-loved actress won a film BAFTA in 1984 for her role in the film A Private Function.
In summer 2009, she announced she was retiring from acting after suffering a stroke earlier that year.

Speaking to The Telegraph, she said the stroke had "finished" her, before adding: "I’ll probably get enough energy [to act again].

"In about another year! I’m not retiring. I’m just resting for a while.”

The same year she was awarded an MBE.
