Blankenese is a western district of Hamburg in the district of Altona. It is a former fishing village that was first mentioned in 1301. Blankenese first belonged to the County of Holstein-Pinneberg in the district of Schauenburg , then to the Duchy of Holstein , which was ruled by the Danish kings in personal union from 1460 , and fell to Prussia in 1866. In 1919, the Pinneberg rural community grew through the merger with the neighboring up-and-coming farming village of Dockenhuden (where there was more space for villa complexes) to form 'Neu-Blankenese', including Mühlenberg, Hirschpark and Iserbrook. In 1927, against the will of many Blankenese residents, Blankenese became a suburb of the city of Altona/Elbe as a result of the Groß-Altona law and was merged with Altona in Hamburg in 1938.
Blankenese is one of the richest districts of Hamburg. The average income here is 117,139 euros per year (2013) and is therefore about three times as high as the Hamburg average (source: Wikipedia).
