This video will cover troubleshooting and replacing the transmission computer or transmission control module. Cleaning the transmission oil pan, magnet and prepping for a new gasket, and finally the transmission pan bolts torque specs. #Sirrom0206
My daughter was driving on the highway when our mazda-3 lost power. She got the AT (automatic transmission) light on the dash. That was our first true indication of transmission shifting problem, but I discounted it. We put the ODB reader on the car and it indicated zero problems with the engine. Mazda’s have two computers, one for the car and one for the transmission. Since I’ve never needed to replace a car computer I saw no need to replace one now. We pulled the transmission pan, replaced the trans filter and continuity tested the solenoids, which tested good.
We discovered the Trans pan bolt torque for a Mazda-3 is ambiguous at best.
Another mechanic vlogged the Chilton manual at 33ft lbs but snapped a bolt using that spec. Unofficial information on the web indicates 8ft pounds. Then we found another mechanic who used 6.5ft pounds. Because I didn’t want to snap a bolt, we started with 8ft pounds however, in the end we went down to 5 foot-pounds. We’ll recheck it in a month.
Reluctantly, I had to accept the transmission control module had died. We called junkyards across the city but found nothing. We even searched local junkyards though they said they had none. We expanded our search to a statewide endeavor but still came up with nothing. We finally found a company on the east coast selling rebuilt control modules, but they were charging $600 dollars. I was absolutely unwilling to pay $600 dollars for a rebuilt part. A year later we still couldn’t find a replacement part. That said we bit the bullet and paid the cash. The instructions that came with the refurbished TCM stated to mount it to the firewall for better airflow.
It’s been several months with zero car problems.
