Also, I used it on my lap and on a picnic table and it didn't tip over. I also noticed there is an additional tripod mount on each side. It felt much more sturdy than my pochade box on my tripod, I might actually enjoy using an easel for watercolor. It also goes flat for watercolor and the torque hinges will hold it snugly and any handle. It's a nice rig and the quality is fantastic. amzn.to/4cVh0jh I am not sure why the plastic part comes out, I think maybe if you wanted to use it as mixing space or to tuck a couple of pieces of paper behind so they stay clean?
