PETER MINTUN: Too Many Tears (Al Dubin - Harry Warren) 1932

This song was sung with gusto by Dick Powell in the 1932 feature 'Blessed Event.' Its chord structure is so complex and clever, it would have made Duke Ellington turn white. It was published without any advertising for the film, with a portrait of Guy Lombardo on the cover. Within a few months of its release,Al Dubin and Harry Warren would be Warner Bros. most celebrated song writing team since Al Dubin & Joe Burke. They went on to write dozens of outstanding popular songs for pictures such as '42nd St.,' 'Crooner,' 'Footlight Parade,' 'Gold Diggers of 1933,' 'Gold Diggers of 1935,' 'Go Into Your Dance,' 'Stars Over Broadway,' 'Broadway Gondolier,' 'Gold Diggers of 1937,' 'Moulin Rouge,' 'Colleen,' 'Roman Scandals,' 'The Singing Marine,' 'Garden of the Moon,' 'Shipmates Forever,' 'Twenty Million Sweethearts,' 'Wonder Bar,' 'Fair and Warmer,' 'Gold Diggers In Paris,' 'Cain and Mabel,' 'Sweet Music,' 'Mr. Dodd Takes The Air,' and 'Melody For Two.'  I had the unforgettable honor of playing the piano for Mr. Warren in his Beverly Hills home. The Steinway concert piano in this video once belonged to composer Dana Suesse (1909-1987) and was restored in 2009 by Cantabile Piano, New York.
