The drug misoprostol for the
The drug misoprostol for the treatment of missed miscarriage, but without strong evidence. This trial was designed to find out whether treatment with mifepristone and misoprostol is a better alternative.
If a missed miscarriage is diagnosed, women and birthing people will be offered different options for resolving it. One of these options is medical management, where drugs are given to help the miscarriage complete.
International guidelines suggest the use of a drug called misoprostol for medical management of missed miscarriage, however it's not always effective and some women and birthing people will still require further medication or surgery to resolve the miscarriage after this treatment.
Our team at the National Centre for Miscarriage Research carried out a clinical trial across 28 hospitals in the UK to find out if treatment with both mifepristone and misoprostol improves the completion rate of miscarriage compared with misoprostol alone.
Thanks to our research, national guidelines have been updated to advise doctors to use both medicines to treat missed miscarriages.
We wish nobody had to experience a missed miscarriage, but if it does happen, we want to make sure people get the best possible care to resolve it quickly and make a devastating experience more manageable.
This research means women and birthing people who sadly experience a missed miscarriage will have better care and their loss resolved more quickly, helping to make a devastating experience more manageable.
