What is spencer opal precious opal

Spencer opal from Idaho is a type of precious opal - opal with the characteristic flash that makes opal so popular.  Spencer opal forms in chert within obsidian flows.  The hydrothermal fluids associated with volcanic activity precipitated opal in openings in the obsidian.  This opal is thick enough to cut and produce cabochons, often without stabilizing or backing.
