More Info:
The male and female of a mating pair build a nest together, and both sit on the egg while it incubates for about a month.
Flamingo chicks are born with grey and white feathers. They do not turn pink for a year or two. Their beaks are straight, and begin to curve as they grow and mature.
Adult bird is 3.3 - 4.6 feet tall and weigh between 3.3 - 9 pounds. Flamingos wingspan ranges from 3.3 - 5 feet.
The flamingo is often seen on the banks of the lake standing on one leg. The flamingo is actually sleeping when it is on one leg but the strange thing is, that only half of the flamingo is actually asleep - the half that contains the leg still standing remains active. The flamingo then swaps over so that the remaining side can get some rest and the side that was sleeping becomes active again.
There are six species of flamingo : greater flamingo, lesser flamingo, Chilean flamingo, Andean flamingo, James' (or puna) flamingo and American (or Caribbean) flamingo.
Groups of flamingos are called colonies or flocks. The colony works together to protect each other from predators and to take care of the young.
There is evidence to indicate the Flamingo evolved at least 30 million years ago, perhaps longer.
They breathe air but have an amazing capacity to hold their breath while they are under the water foraging for food.
Flamingos have a funny way of eating. They place their bills upside down in the water and suck water into their mouths. Then they pump the water out the sides of their mouths. Tiny plants and animals remain to make a tasty meal.
