I will show my method, how to check the tension of a timing belt with a resonance, that is, a method different from the instructions. The method is visual and accurately show the degree of tension of the timing belt from weak to overtightened, since the stretch will be clearly visible visually. The essence of checking the timing belt tension with this method is to assess the degree of belt tension on a running engine when the engine crankshaft speed gives a resonance of oscillations of the belt leading branch due to the cyclic load on the timing belt itself. According to the amplitude of oscillations of the leading branch, one can estimate the degree of belt tension. The amplitude (range) of oscillations of the leading (descending) branch of the timing belt must be in the range from 1.5 to 2 cm in the zone of its maximum. If the span is less than 1 cm, or not at all, then the belt will tighten. If the span is more than 2 cm, then the timing belt is slightly tensioned. The belt overhang is fraught with severe wear of the timing belt itself, with an increased risk of a sudden break, increased wear of the belt tensioning roller and pump bearings - the engine water pump, that is, a strong reduction in the service life of these parts, which can damage the entire engine. A weak belt stretch is fraught with the likelihood of a belt jumping and grabbing the back of the belt against its protective casing, which will also negatively affect its service life. I have been using this method for checking the tension of the timing belt for more than 10 years and the belt serves for a long time and regularly with the pump and the tension roller.
