Escaped Chasm: How Temmie Chang Made Her First Video Game

If you haven’t played Escaped
If you haven’t played Escaped Chasm by Temmie Chang yet, you really should. It’s entirely free and very beautiful, and best of all, the whole thing lasts around twenty minutes, so it doesn’t even take a large time commitment!
(Once upon a time we used to like long games. Now short is the way to go, because we’ll never have time to finish a big one!)
Temmie Chang is just lovely. She’s previously given us an interview about her work on Undertale, and her art and animation is absolutely fantastic. Whenever she works with Toby Fox, the pair make wonderful stuff – and Escaped Chasm is no exception to this!
There’s a lot that can be learned from the way Temmie approached her first game. She made a small, accessible game that isn’t too ambitious or challenging. She focused on her unique talents when designing the game, and learned what she needed to do to push herself further without over-exerting herself.
And, when she found a roadblock that she just couldn’t get past, she was willing to rely on other people. As such, we all get some nice Toby Fox music to enjoy while playing the game!
The source for this game is Temmie’s twitter feed – she’s given a lot of insight into the game making process over the past few months as she’s worked her way through this game. Perhaps her best tweet on the subject: “i got a college degree in animation to learn how to make rpgmaker games”! Gotta love a college reference!
(Also, the game comes bundled with the super secret Escaped Chasm 2, which is just awesome.)
So here’s to Temmie Chang. We don’t want to draw too much attention to Escaped Chasm because she wants to keep things low-key, but this game is absolutely wonderful, and the story behind it is very charming.
Kotor deserves a medal for getting the art on this video done for today. He’s been solo parenting for two days while BretonStripes was away on business, and somehow still managed to get this thing drawn. Apologies if there are points where an extra illustration would help, but in fairness, the fact that this video is finished at all is a miracle.
