Binasal occlusion is a method
Binasal occlusion is a method of partially, or fully, blocking the visual field toward the nose in each eye. It can be effective for patients who have had a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and now suffer from visual motion sensitivity and/or other conditions related to Post Trauma Vision Syndrome. This patient's "trauma" was due to brain surgery for cancer. How and why it helps these patients, and some with other related conditions, is not fully understood. But, a provider of advanced low vision services can evaluate and help symptomatic TBI patients.
Midwest Low Vision is located inside Long Family Eye Care at 660 South College Avenue in Bloomington, Indiana. While we use satellite locations throughout south-central Indiana, this has been our home since 2002. Dr. Long has practiced low vision as a specialty since 1997.
Our low vision patients typically have dry macular degeneration, wet macular degeneration, Stargardt macular dystrophy (Stargardt's), diabetic retinopathy, traumatic brain injury (TBI), albinism (including ocular albinism), glaucoma, optic neuropathy, brain stroke, and many other vision-limiting conditions.
Not all of our patients are legally blind. Many are partially-sighted, have lost their peripheral vision (tunnel vision, hemianopsia, hemianopia), or even have near normal vision. In the latter case, they may simply need strong reading glasses, strong bifocals, or prismatic reading glasses...special glasses just beyond what most eye doctors would normally prescribe.
