Newborn Baby with Spina Bifida Undergoes Multiple Surgeries

Dakayta Givens was born with spina bifida -- the spinal cord was open so she was at a significant risk for infection which could turn fatal. Dakayta underwent surgery with neurosurgeon Dr. Dale Swift at only 2 days old to close the opening. She went to the operating room with neurosurgeon Dr. David Sacco for a second surgery at a couple of weeks old to implant a shunt which drains fluid from her brain to the abdomen where it is reabsorbed into the bloodstream. Dakayta is now home with her parents and older sister.
