Data mining applications are often
Data mining applications are often applied to data that was collected for another purpose or for future but unspecified applications. Hence it becomes crucial to assess the quality of data, and for that reason, data mining cannot usually take advantage of the significant benefits of “addressing quality issues at the source.”
Since preventing data quality problems is not an option in such a case, Data Mining mainly focuses on:
* The detection and correction of data quality problems (is often called data cleaning) and
* The use of algorithms that can tolerate poor data quality.
