But do you think the differences between SI and CI engines will also differ in their combustion stages? Absolutely!
CI engine has 4 stages of combustion
Ignition delay stage / Preparatory stage - This is the time interval between the starting stage of fuel ignition and when the fuel gets ignited. This can be further classified into- physical delay period and chemical delay period.
Rapid Combustion - The fuel gets accumulated in the combustion chamber during the delay period and starts burning spontaneously. The sudden combustion of the fuel results in a rapid pressure rise. At this phase, the burning cannot be easily controlled.
Controlled combustion stage - Because of the high pressure produced, fuel will get ignited without delay. The combustion at this stage can be controlled by fuel injection. This stage ends when the maximum temperature is attained.
After burning stage - This is where the leftover fuel in the combustion chamber burns during the expansion stroke.
Finally, we have illustrated all these stages into a single pressure-crank angle diagram to get a better understanding.
