The pursuit of performance on Valve’s Steam Deck is difficult at times, given the hardware restrictions in place. Now, a new AMD FSR 3 Steam Deck mod brings hope of opening the door to some higher frame rate figures, but it’s only a work in progress, meaning it’s got a long way to go before it reaches its potential.
Most of the best Steam Deck games run incredibly well on the Valve handheld, but not every title plays smoothly. This new FSR 3 mod shows the potential for more demanding games to get a boost on the Steam Deck, but the compromises are too severe in its current state.
LukeFZ is behind this new FSR 3 mod for the Steam Deck, and early signs suggest they are on to a winner. Taking games like Spider-Man Remastered, Hogwarts Legacy, and Cyberpunk 2077, the mod is able to creep out a higher fps figure than was possible before.
4090 vs Deck:
Valve has released its Steam Hardware Survey for December, the last of 2023, and the figures are about the same as what they were in November's survey. However, we've taken a closer look at the numbers and there are some interesting points where the data doesn't make a ton of sense. Par for the course, but let's dig a bit deeper.
GPU market share numbers and weird statistics
In the overall results for DX12 GPUs, AMD and Intel showed slight gains while Nvidia lost a small amount of market share. Summing everything up, Nvidia dropped by 0.5% while AMD and Intel went up about a quarter of a percent each. This put AMD at about 15%, Intel at 5%, and Nvidia at 80%, which isn't far off Jon Peddie Research estimates.
The Vulkan and DX11 tables show potentially even larger swings, though some of that might be due to the sheer number of different GPUs shown in the Vulkan table. Note also that we "corrected" the provided data to normalize all columns to 100% total — for reasons known only to Valve, the Vulkan table sums up to around 196~197 percent, while the DX12 and DX11 tables sum to 90~96 percent, depending on the month.
Problem:
Unsurprisingly, eager gamers are turning to the second-hand market to secure a Steam Deck, but one horror story might make you think twice before making that cut-price purchase. One user found that Valve was less than helpful thanks to their Steam Deck being reported stolen, almost a year after the purchase was made.
The Steam Deck has been on a tear over the last year, and 2024 looks set to be another great year for Valve’s portable, as well as PC gaming handhelds as a whole. Despite this, there are some harsh lessons to be learned about buying a Deck on the second-hand market as one buyer has discovered.
Reddit user un_commoncents_ reached out to Steam support only to be met with the refusal of access to any warranty services due to the console being reported stolen.
In the comments on the post, the original poster points out that they were simply hoping to send it to Valve and were willing to pay for a repair. They were in no way expecting Valve to fix the Steam Deck for free, or that it would still be under any kind of warranty. Either way, Valve seems well within its rights to refuse any service based on the current ownership status of the Steam Deck in question.
