Hip Hop is from the Bronx takes an honest look at the roots of Hip Hop Culture. The foundation of this culture and its many influences can be found in Caribbean, African American, and the Latino experience. The focus here is not, nor ever has been on the color of one’s skin, but on the truth as it pertains to Hip Hop. This cultural expression has its origins in the Bronx N.Y. The Graffiti writing movement, or as it is more commonly known, writing, was originally practiced by White, Latino, and black youth. Some of the main DJ’s that extended the breaks for the B.Boys were of Caribbean, African American, and Puerto Rican descent. A man of Caribbean descent first coined the term B.Boy, and the foundation for what would be known as breaking is found in the Rock dance, or Rock. This was invented by Latinos, mainly Puerto Ricans. Breaking itself was formulated by African American and Puerto Rican youth in the Bronx. The voice of the culture was created by African American youth, and is better known as emceeing. They are the pillars of what is known as rap today. Color is not at the center of this discussion, but who and where does this come from is of great importance.
