Just outside the port town of Luderitz, Namibia, Kolmanskop  in the Namib Desert was a diamond mining town until the diamond industry declined after World War I.  It was named after a transport driver named Johnny Coleman who, during a sand storm, abandoned his ox wagon on a small incline opposite the settlement.  The first diamonds were found sitting on the sand and the town grew up along the mines.  Abandoned after the fall of the diamond market, the town now has sand-filled houses, a hospital, a school and other buildings that makes for a truly unique ghost town.  There are tours that give the history of the town and buildings.  It's a must-see if you are in the area.
