Okay, so it's actually curled leaf mountain mahogany. But it is very similar to desert ironwood in both hardness and appearance. And it made a stunning handle for my old Cold Steel Trail Boss. This was once the best value companion axe but the newer model is not as good as the original. I broke the very nice hickory handle that came with the axe. Since it's a pretty lightweight axe head, I decided to repurpose it into a camp hatchet to do chores on the mountain.
