What is the “Threshold of Tolerance” and why does it matter for a PDA child or teen? 🧐

It can be helpful to remember these moments as “tipping points” rather than triggers that are always the same. ❤️

Different PDA children and teens have different Thresholds, but as parents (and therapists, teachers, etc.) we often can’t locate the Threshold because they are consistently past it when we finally learn about PDA.

This is when we see things like nervous system burnout, hair-trigger fight/flight behavior, total shutdown, and constant equalizing behavior (controlling, correcting, destruction, aggression towards another or oneself). Once we start accommodating more consistently using the logic of their brain and nervous system, we support them in accessing a window of tolerance. They will still be PDA, but not every trigger will tip them past the Threshold.
