Unraveling the story of wild rice (Zizania palustris) could take a lifetime. I only had 3 days. But those 3 days revealed a bit about how this plant has provided nutritious food, created an economy, and shaped entire communities of people living around the Great Lakes, the region that wild rice also calls home.

Zooming in on the plant itself, you can think of her as a character. A rather tenacious one at that. She’s delicate but clever. For all her struggles both natural and manmade, she’s adaptive. And you can try to tame her, but she’ll always be a little wild.

FACT CHECK: At this time, Minnesota is the #1 producer of cultivated wild rice. California is also a top producer.
