I got asked recently, what are offsets and why are they important when dealing with a cnc. When it comes to precision a good cnc is amazing it does however come with some drawbacks that you have to take into consideration. One of them is how precise is too precise. For example if you want to cut a 1 inch square to fit into a 1 inch hole and they are both exactly one inch they won't fit because there is not enough play or tolerance in the part. This is where in the software of cnc machines you can add or subtract very small amounts in order to get the perfect fit. So here we go a brief explanation of a couple of the offsets you need to be aware of when CNC machining.
