Giacinto Scelsi (1905 -1988) began attending the world of art, music and literature in the 1920s - during his frequent trips abroad - establishing friendships that introduced him to the international cultural movements of the time.
His interests in compositional languages and techniques such as dodecaphony, the theories of Skrjabin and Steiner date back to the 1930s. In 1930 he completed the composition for Rotative orchestra (Paris, Salle Pleyel 1931 under the direction of Pierre Monteux), a work that reveals him to the international musical world.
He spends the Second World War in Switzerland, where the Trio for strings (1942) and various other works for piano are performed; these were very troubled years, in which interest in poetry, the visual arts, oriental mysticism and esotericism prevailed. The active acceptance of oriental philosophies, Zen doctrines, Yoga and the problematic of the Unconscious is from this period, which is also reflected in experimentation in the musical field.
He then settled in Rome (where he remained until his death on 8 August 1988). The instrumentation of figures determined by chance, the improvisation on traditional instruments used in a new way, the use of the ondola (first instrument - electronic capable of reproducing the quarter and eighth tones) but above all the way of improvising in one state devoid of conditioning very close to the Zen void, mark his most significant works.
Scelsi's method of composition was quite original: he recorded his improvisations on magnetic tape, then entrusting the transcription to collaborators who worked under his guidance.
The orchestration method was also very original, which consisted of pairing similar instruments out of phase by a quarter of a tone, with unpredictable beat effects.
The revelation of this new, important phase begins with the performance of the composition for orchestra Four pieces on one note (1959); the publication of his theoretical and literary work also dates back to this period. In the eighties he began the publication of his impressive musical production at the Editions Salabert in Paris.
