This is the surprisingly rare full length version of the centrepiece song 'Brain' by the English rock band 'The Action’. It is not available on the posthumous standard Rolled Gold LP.
Although Beatles' producer George Martin once again recognised he had fortunately come across some the best talent of what 60s rock had to offer in The Action, an intended and planned even first album and indeed deserved commercial success for the band was unfortunately not to be.
The Action in this guise were active from 1965 to 1968. By this time of recording, original lead guitarist Pete Watson had most probably gone from the band (departing at the end of 1966), and as a therefore then current four piece, the in-effect replacement Martin Stone and keyboardist/flutist/multi-instrumentalist Ian Whiteman would be yet to join later in 1967 (although a keyboard does play an important part of the recording, so could that actually be Whiteman involved).
The recording itself probably took place towards the beginning of 1967, the idea originally being for it to be one of a number of initial recordings that would eventually have contributed the the band's long-awaited said first LP.
According to the lead singer Reggie King, 'Brain' was recorded without being thought up beforehand or being rehearsed, with a basic chord sequence of the band's (usually rhythm) guitarist Alan King (no relation) on guitar, Reggie 'opening up' with 'Take your brain it's time to go!' and the rest of the band then joining in. Alan King has jokingly mentioned a reason for the song's sound was his excitement, and his foot’s resulting enthusiastic use on his wah wah peddle during the recording. To quote George Martin on the band: "...to this day I am baffled that they did not achieve superstardom…".'
