This is a tutorial for people who are interested in learning how to use colour pencils. This drawing of a a mango uses only 9 pencils and covers some of the basic techniques of layering and using thinners to blend  color pencils to create a lively and realistic drawing.

Reference photo and writen step by step instructions can be found on my website: http://wp.me/p7i4kg-7J

I used Polychromos pencils:

White
Cadmium yellow
Pompeian red
Indian red
May green
Green gold
Cinnamon
Payne's grey
Cold grey III

Equivalent Prismacolor pencils ( I find them to be a little more difficult to control with the solvent, they will spread VERY easily...  but will give a slightly more vibrant result.

White
Canary yellow
Carmine red ( makes the blush a little more pink, but quite pretty)
Henna
Lime peel
Artichoke
Nectar
Warm grey 90%
Cool grey 30%

I used Arches Hot pressed watercolor paper for this example, however this is quite extravagant. My favorite budget friendly paper is Fabriano accademia paper. Other suitable papers would be
-Fabriano Artistico Hot press water color paper paper
- Stonehenge (  this will drink up a lot of thinners!! but has a nice soft result)
-Canson Mi-Teintes, White
This is not an exhaustive list, so feel free to experiment whatever paper  you can obtain. Generally I recommend a sturdy paper with a medium tooth

The pencil is blended using Odorless mineral spirits, I use Art Spectrum brand, but there are many alternative brands (such as Gamsol) . It is a staple product in oil painting and is widely available in art stores.

If you try this out, I would love to see your results!
