Super Monkey Ball (iOS, 2008) Gameplay: All Worlds (with Hidden Stages)

The original Super Monkey Ball for iOS is now playable via touchHLE. The emulator was essentially created specifically for the purpose of running this game, but it has potentially opened the door for the preservation of many more 32-bit iOS applications that have been lost to time. NOTE: I recorded this using the scale hack in the emulator, so it's running at 4x the resolution. Textures aren't upscaled, but it does make the 3D elements look smoother than they would on original hardware! Also worth noting that the emulator maps tilt controls to an analog stick, making this play more like a traditional Monkey Ball game. Some strats performed here would probably be more difficult with the tilt controls, but they might be theoretically possible? This video showcases all 110 levels across all worlds, including the hidden stages that are unlocked by collecting all 10 bananas in each stage without falling out. Included at the end is a short demonstration of the Instant Play/Shuffle Play mode. This game and its sequel are, to my knowledge, the only official Super Monkey Ball games to include a randomizer mode, so I figured it was worth showing off. This game is a bit of a mix of elements from Banana Blitz and Touch & Roll, borrowing the world themes, music, and UI from the former and character sprites and sound design from the latter. According to a developer of the original demo, it was based on the source code from Touch & Roll, originally being built for the iPod before developers had proper iPhone development tools. The physics do feel pretty similar to Touch & Roll. It's a really interesting release!
