I can still remember how our Grandmother frightened us when we were eating different kinds of fruits with their seeds saying that the seeds will grow into big trees inside our stomachs. She used to tell us the same when we were eating guava seeds as well. There was an obvious chance of us getting sick with stomach aches by eating the seeds with our ignorance as kids. It was funny when we come to think of it, as we stopped eating Guvava pips those days as we got this frightful notion of getting big trees in the stomach. Actually it is true that guava pips are difficult in digesting and they can lead to stomach problems if eaten in excess. Since as kids we never understood the truth about it, so we were been frightened with this tree growing story!

Im our ancestral house garden there were so many varieties of Guava trees those days. One of our elder uncle’s uncles is growing Apple guavas in a land near our village. So our aunty had sent many messages through our brother to come and pick guavas as there are plenty in those trees. So as usual our brother dear was so impatiently waiting and asking me so many times that when I am going to pick the Guavas.

That day in the morning, I got ready to go and pick some apple guavas and repeatedly calling our brother but he was not to be seen. Finally I went alone as brother was not to be found. Since they were new guava trees, they were small and was easy to pick the fruits. Unlike those days guavas, these guavas didn’t have much pips and the skin was thick as well. When they were cut, they were a bit like apples too. Since I went alone, I quickly picked the guavas and came home. Since there were 2 soursops at home, I already decided to make a different type of a dessert by using guava and the soursop. First I incorporated fresh milk together with guava juice and then the soursop juice, adding corn flour and mixed well. Then I set the dessert into two layers. Then I added chow chow pieces on to the soursop layer and added the green cherry pieces which were in the sugar syrup. Of course they had beautifully enhanced the taste of the pudding. In fact this pudding was a very soft pudding. Meanwhile our brother dear had got really upset because I went to pick the guavas alone and even refused to eat the pudding as well. I never even thought that he will get this angry for that!

I got a new idea to make a guava curry for lunch. Though I have tasted the guava curry that was made by my aunt, at her place several times, I have never made it by my self. I cooked the curry exactly the way it was told to me by aunty. Since these guava was plump and fleshy as apples, the cooked curry looked so nice. On the other hand it was tasted similar to a yellow cucumber curry but tasted as breadfruit curry when it was eaten. It has to be cooked from mildly ripen guava as you cannot get the exact taste from v ripe guavas. Since I picked such lots of guavas, I made brothers favorite chilli guava salad from the balance as well.

Meanwhile our cheeky little brother has taken 2 guavas and had made a drink by adding few strawberries which uncle Siriwardena brought to us from Negombo town. Such a crafty fellow our brother was as he brought me a glass of drink as well saying “I made this juice because grandmother wanted me to make it”. Of course I know his tricks as I correctly guessed why he brought a glass for me also as he was dying to eat my delicious  guava pudding. He flatly refused the guava salad and the pudding when I “ pulled his leg” by telling him that both me and grandmother finished the pudding without keeping for him. I later felt a bit bad as brother got very sad n upset but how can I ever eat anything without giving it to my one and only loving little brother. That afternoon ended with a very enjoyable note as grandmother, brother and I, nicely enjoyed the Lemon milk with guava pieces and also had the pudding even before our dinner.
