This video demonstrates 4 methods
This video demonstrates 4 methods of creating a right twist (2 replicate a true cable cross) and 4 methods of left twist (2 replicate a true cable cross). Any of these methods can be used/substituted for any of the other methods, based on your preference of ease, result, and underlying structure. These methods work for twists involving standard knit stitches, and are not suitable for RT and LT involving ktbl sts and purl sts. Written instructions for each method can be found further down.

Written Instructions for each of the techniques shown:
Most common
RT: K2tog, but do not drop sts off left ndl; k 1st st again
LT: K 2nd st tbl from behind 1st st, k 1st st.
Alternate RT/LT (not structurally identical to true cable)
RT: K 2nd st, inserting ndl from front to back, k 1st st
LT: (mirror of 1st RT): Sl 2 sts, one at a time, as if to knit; return to left ndl; k 2nd st tbl from behind, k2togtbl.
RT/LT that are structurally identical to true cables
RT: k 2nd st through front leg so that ndl tip ends to the right of 1st st, k 1st st
LT: Sl 2 sts, one at a time, as if to knit; return to left ndl; k 2nd st tbl from behind, k 1st tbl.
Futzy RT/LT
RT: Sl 2 as if to k2tog, return to left ndl; k2 each tbl
LT: L 2 as if to p2tog tbl, return to left ndl one at a time, slipping from back, k2.
