Since ancient times, a person has subconsciously understood that red color (even a short one) helps to maintain or improve vision. How and where did human eyes get red in ancient times?
The first is a red dawn, a phenomenon that marks the rising and setting of the Sun. It arises due to the reflection in the atmosphere of the sun's rays, which we see before the appearance of the luminary on the horizon and after its sunset. It does not last long, but it is quite enough for one procedure for the prevention of vision. By the way, birds and many animals (even fish) also like to meet the morning dawn.
The second source of the red color was the fire and the coals of the fire. The bonfire played an important role in the evolution of human vision. For millions of years, every day, people spent a significant part of their time around the fire, because the fire was the only alternative source of lighting and heat.
And now let's think and answer: how often does a modern person meet the morning or evening dawn? Does he have a need or at least the opportunity to sit by the fire in the evenings or relax by the burning fireplace? The answer is obvious... All this is a thing of the past.
A London-based research team found that even short-term exposure to dark red light can turn retinal mitochondria back on and increase ATP production, leading to dramatic improvements in vision in people over 40. The group studied the effect of a single 3-minute exposure to red light with a wavelength of 670 nm and a low radiation energy of about 8 mW/cm2.
Professor Glen Jeffrey of the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London, who led the study, wrote in a press release: "The weakened energy system in retinal cells can be recharged with a simple red LED flashlight, just like a normal battery."
The results showed an average 17% improvement in color vision after exposure to red light. The effect persisted for a week. For some older participants, the improvement was 20%.
It was not difficult to make small calculations on the power of red light emission by a computer monitor or a modern TV screen, as well as adjust this color to a wavelength of 670 nm.
