The Alishan Forest Railway "Shay Locomotive" (steam locomotive) SL-21 and "Cypress Wooden" carriages operating between Chiayi Station (嘉義站) and Beimen Station (北門站). At the same time, this steam locomotive doesn't need a helper engine (banking engine, pusher engine) at the rear when operating!! The Alishan Forest Railway is an 77.65 km network in narrow gauge railways (762 mm) running up to and throughout the popular mountain resort of Alishan in Chiayi County, Taiwan (part of the railway is located in Nantou County, Taiwan). The Alishan Forest Railway climbs from Chiayi Station (嘉義站) at an altitude of 30 m to Zhushan Station (祝山站) at 2,451 m, and the total climbing height of the railway system is 2,420 m. In order to cope with the difference in altitude, the system has spiral loop railway, zig zag railway (Z-shaped switchbacks), uses a lot of tunnels and bridges. Because the system is a mountain-climbing railway, there are steep slopes along the way, so when the train is running, the locomotive (including diesel locomotive and steam locomotive) faces direction of the downhill, and the carriage faces direction of the uphill. This mode of operation will enable the train to climb more favorably, it can also avoid the breakage caused by overload of the connector when going up the mountain, and the weakening of braking ability when going down the mountain. The locomotive pushes train up the hill at the back of carriages, train driver will be in the front carriage and using remote to control the locomotive behind. The Shay locomotive is a gearwheel steam locomotive that originated and was primarily used in North America. The locomotives were built to the patents of Ephraim Shay, who has been credited with popularization of the concept of a geared steam locomotive. Because of its unique driving method, it has strong climbing ability and is not easy to slip on steep tracks to avoid energy loss, so the Shay locomotives were especially suited to logging, mining and industrial operations and could operate successfully on steep or poor quality tracks. This is obviously different from the common steam locomotives (horizontal cylinders and driving the steel wheel through the connecting rods). The following is a detailed introduction: The Shay locomotive uses vertical cylinders and is driven by bevel gears. The position of the boiler is biased towards the left side of the locomotive body, so that there is space on the right side of the locomotive body to install a two-cylinder or three-cylinder steam cylinder, and to balance the weight. The cylinder and piston of the steam engine on the right are installed upright, and the piston connecting rod pushes the crankshaft on the driving wheel shaft to turn the vertically installed transmission shaft. There is a bevel gear on the transmission shaft and meshes with the bevel gear on the driving wheel, and push the steel wheel. The advantage of the Shay locomotive is that all the wheels under the locomotive body are powered, and it can use the whole weight of the locomotive and all the wheels to generate traction. The ratio of piston stroke to wheel speed is high, so it can run successfully and continuously in slipping conditions, while traditional linkage drive methods will cause the wheel to slip, the track to heat up, and traction to be lost. 110 years ago, because Japan encountered technical bottlenecks in the development of Alishan, and Japan didn't have relevant technology to overcome the problem of trains climbing steep slopes, so they purchased Shay locomotive suitable for climbing from "Lima Locomotive Works" in the United States. The "Cypress Wooden" carriages is manufactured by the Taiwan Rolling Stock Company (TRSC) commissioned by the Forestry Bureau. The appearance design of this kind of carriage refers to the VIP car dedicated to the "Imperial House of Japan" on Taiwan Railway in the past. The cypress wooden carriages has outdoor porch, this design makes it full of retro style and make passengers feel as if they have returned to 100 years ago!! The section between Shizilu (十字路) and Erwanping (二萬平) will be completed this year, it including Pingzhena Station (屏遮那站), First Switch (第一分道) and Second Switch (第二分道), so the next year, this railway system will be able to operate directly from Chiayi to Alishan, and passengers can connect Shenmu Line (神木線), Zhaoping Line (沼平線) and Zhushan Line (祝山線) in Alishan National Forest Recreation Area. 0:00 Start 1:04 Alishan Express by DL-48 diesel locomotive arriving at Beimen Station (Main Line uphill). 2:20 SL-21 Shay locomotive & Cypress wooden carriages without using helper engine at the rear, it's operating at Beimen Station (Main Line uphill & downhill). 3:42 SL-21 Shay locomotive & Cypress wooden carriages without using helper engine at the rear, it's operating on Main Line in East District, Chiayi City (Main Line downhill).
