Bleeding a Sea Star Hydraulic Steering System

In this video is how to check the level and bleed a Sea Star outboard hydraulic steering system.  Bleeding a hydraulic system is purging it from air.  Air compresses and causes the steering to not be “tight” but loose and unresponsive. In our case, the steering wheel could be turned more than one revolution before the outboard motor would begin to turn or respond.

Bleeding the hydraulic steering is a simple task but it will take two people to do it properly. In all honesty, you should use a clear tube with a diameter than can go over the bleeder port.  This way the hydraulic fluid wont cause a mess and you can let the tube drain into a cup.  For this video I didn’t have a tube but I wish I did.  Also, using a tube won’t allow air to go back in the system as easily since there is oil in the tube.

This steering system was on a 2012 Nitro Z6 18 ft bass boat outfitted with a Mercury 115 Pro XS
