"The participation of Syria, an influential Arab state, and the reunion of the Arab states and the Gulf countries signify many things, including a united front against terrorism, the unification of Arab ranks, and Syria's return to the Arab fold where it has always belonged. Although this summit presents many complexities, we remain hopeful it will serve as a beacon of hope for a region seeking resolution and progress."

STORYLINE:
Preparations for the Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia were completed on Thursday, as Arab leaders started to arrive to the Kingdom.

Flags of member states were seen on the streets and roundabouts of Jeddah, where the summit will start on Friday.

Syria’s flag was raised for the summit for the first time following a 12-year suspension from the league.

"The participation of Syria, an influential Arab state, and the reunion of the Arab states and the Gulf countries signify many things, including a united front against terrorism, the unification of Arab ranks, and Syria's return to the Arab fold," said Issa Al-Amiri, a Saudi political analyst.

Syrian President Bashar Assad headed to Saudi Arabia on Thursday to attend the regional summit, his first visit to the oil-rich kingdom since Syria’s conflict began in 2011, the president's office said.

During Syria's civil war, Saudi Arabia had been a key backer of armed opposition groups attempting to overthrow Assad.

However, in recent months, Riyadh has called for dialogue to end the conflict that has killed half a million people and displaced half of Syria’s pre-war population.
