In this tutorial, I will show you how you can use zapier actions to create a thing, find a thing, modify a thing, and trigger an API workflow in bubble.

ZAPIER PLUGIN SETUP

Make sure that you have the zapier plugin setup with your bubble app. Check out my video below and review documentation on bubble.io to learn how to do this:

How to Send Data from Bubble.io to Za...

CREATE A THING IN BUBBLE

We created a simple type in bubble called ‘customer,’ with the following fields, ‘name,’ ‘email’ and ‘phone.’ We created a new page on bubble called customer_list with a repeating group that displays customer information whenever a new type customer is created.

For our trigger, we created a simple google form with the following fields, ‘name,’ ‘email’ and ‘phone.’ Next we add a step to create a new thing in bubble. In the dropdown menu labeled data type, you will see your application types. We then select our type ‘customer’ and map the fields ‘name,’ ‘email’ and ‘phone’ with the data inputs from the google form submission trigger. Proceed to test the action step. You should see the new customer record in your bubble database and the new record displaying in the repeating group on the customer_list page.

FIND A THING IN BUBBLE

Add a step in zapier to find a bubble thing. Set the data type to ‘customer.’ We will be searching for the record using the customer’s phone number, so make the search field ‘phone number.’ Then set your search constraint to ‘equals’ and your search term to the phone number data field from the google form submission trigger. Proceed to test and zapier should find the record in bubble.

MODIFY A THING

Add a step in zapier to modify a bubble thing and set the data type to ‘customer.’ For ‘thing id’ add dynamic data and select the id of the thing from the previous step (find a bubble thing). Map the bubble fields you want to modify. In our example, we plan on modifying the customer name and phone number. To make sure this is working correctly, I recommended deleting the step to create a thing in bubble before publishing the zap. Once published, find the phone number of an established record in bubble and submit the google form with that phone number but submit different info for the name and email. Check bubble to see if bubble updated the record in the database. You should also see the info updated in the row of the repeating group on the customer_list page.

TRIGGER AN API WORKFLOW

Finally, we add a simple API workflow in bubble to send an email to a new customer whenever a new record is created in the type customer. Head on over backend workflows in bubble add a new backend workflow. Select ‘new api workflow’ and name your api workflow customer_email. Make sure ‘trigger workflow with’ is set to POST and proceed to setup a new key. Set your key to ‘customer’ and the type to ‘customer.’ Then add a step to the workflow to send an email. Make the ‘to’ field dynamic and set it to ‘customer’s email’ Add any content you like for the subject and email body. In our example, we make the subject “Thanks for signing up [customer name]”’ and the email body “Hi [customer name], thanks for signing up” We then print the customer's email and phone number in the body of the email. Head back to zapier and add a step to trigger an API workflow You’ll see the name of your API workflow in the field ‘API Workflow.’ Make sure you select it and then for the customer field, you can use dynamic data and select the id of the thing from the step find a bubble thing. Test your action, and an email will be sent from bubble to the customer’s email address.
