Learn how to play "A Horse With No Name" Easy Beginner Guitar Song Lesson + Tutorial! This easy 2 chord song is the easiest song you can play on guitar! It uses 2 simple chord shapes (Em, D) and repeats them over and over. This folk classic uses a very easy strumming pattern and is perfect if you are a beginner who is just getting started on guitar. I have laid it out in 6 steps so you can learn this song in a methodical way.

The lesson begins with the two chord shapes needed to play "A Horse With No Name." This is an easy two chord song. The first shape uses two fingers. It's one of the standard chord shapes, E minor. The other shape uses just one finger!
From there, we discuss muting the thickest string, which isn't essential but will definitely make this song sound better. We use our thumb or our finger to lightly touch the thickest string so that it doesn't ring out.
Next, we learn a strumming pattern. This is the most common strumming pattern ever. We break it down, count it out and figure out how to play it with solid steady rhythm.
Then we put the chords and strumming pattern together and play our easy two chord progression. At this point, you can play the entire song, but we can take it a step further.
First, I want to upgrade our strumming pattern. We're going to take the pattern that we're already using and then we're going to add something to it. This bit that we're adding is heavily syncopated, that means it uses lots of upstrokes and has a very off beat rhythm. We need to focus on counting and missing the downstrokes in order to get it to sound steady and smooth. We put it together with the strumming pattern we already learned and then at this point, we can play through the entire song just like on the recording.
Finally I go over the chord order. When I search "A Horse With No Name chords and lyrics" on Google, the first result that comes up is missing some parts. It's close, but I came up with a really easy shorthand way to write out the chord order with 100% accuracy so that you have a roadmap for playing through the entire song.
