In quarantine, I made feature-length film. In it, I play every character. There are 18. I wrote, shot, edited, and scored the film in 3 months. It’s called ‘Armour.’ This movie will certainly change the way you look at films and filmmaking here on out.

It’s ‘Sons of Anarchy’ meets ‘Drive’ but set in Brooklyn, NY. The film explores the physical and psychological armour people have to develop in order to survive their surroundings. The story follows James O’Malley, a man trying to leave a prominent motorcycle club in Brooklyn only to get dragged back into the criminal underworld in order to protect his brother.

Shot on Canon 5d Mark II, Zeiss 50mm.
Edited on Final Cut Pro.

The Making of the Film:

I’m a Vancouver based filmmaker, actor, and stand up comedian. Armour is the third feature film I’ve made, and it’s unquestionably my strongest creative endeavour; which is difficult for me to acknowledge considering I spent years completing my last feature ‘Double Booked.’

‘Armour’ was a spec script that I had been working on earlier this year. I had a draft of the first act written prior to quarantine and had an outline of the story I wanted to tell. But as self isolation became a reality in mid-March, I began to focus on the screenplay. I saw this as an unparalleled opportunity to focus on writing in an intensive and all consuming way.

I was stuck on a scene in the middle of the film, so I decided to put in on camera to see if it would flow cinematically. I shot it on my canon 5d mk ii, edited it on Final Cut Pro, and watched it. I thought this was a decent writing tactic; to utilize my skills as a filmmaker to shoot a scene, to use my acting/stand up comedy instincts to come up with compelling dialogue, edit for writing and performance on Final Cut Pro, and finally, refine the tone and mood by creating a musical score using Logic and GarageBand.

It then dawned on me that I had just completed about four drafts of this scene by running it through this process. But naturally, I thought there was no way I could to do this for the whole film; there were multiple action sequences, a large number of characters, among many other elements that were not film-able within the confines of an apartment...After all the film was meant to feel like ‘Sons of Anarchy’ meets ‘Drive’ but set in Brooklyn, NY.

Nonetheless, the idea was planted in my brain. So I set myself a challenge: Could I find a way to film the opening sequence which is a tense action scene involving multiple characters in addition to a motorcycle chase. If I could figure that out, I would keep on filming.

Using my three decades of movie watching, my on set acting experience, and my obsession with behind the scenes DVD/BluRay extra features as a teen and young adult, I figured out a way to create a 5 minute opening sequence that was actually compelling and even somewhat stylish, in an understated way. I was shocked. It actually played.

So I set out to finish the screenplay not by writing it but by filming it. One scene at a time, playing each character, I knocked off scene after scene. I would change my look slightly, but not much. I simply decided to play the essences of the characters, no make up, no changing my facial hair, nothing fancy. I wore different outfits, and changed my hair slightly from character to character, but not much more. I played old, young, male, female. Again, I realize that sounds like a recipe for disaster but it actually works. I think it plays because I simply tried to bring each character’s soul to the surface.
