Programmers In The 90's: The Golden Age Of Coding

The golden age of programming was the 90's. Software engineers today have all the tools, languages, and technology at their disposal and I'd argue build less useful applications. Even though programmers had exponentially worse tech, docs, communities and ecosystems. When they had an issue they had to read an obscure forum (if it existed) or buy a magazine from the store in the hopes in shined some light on the problem. Why then, were they so much more efficient as Software Engineers?
