How to do stem stitch

The stem stitch is a great embroidery stitch to make thick lines for example for outlining. Also, as the name suggests, it is traditionally used for stitching stems of flowers or twigs.
In other languages, the stem stitch is also called: DE Stielstich – FR point de tige – IT punto stelo/erba – ES punto de cordoncillo/ tallo – PR ponto de haste – SE stjälksöm
