The Castle (ザ・キャッスル) is video game developed by ASCII and released for the SG-1000/SC-3000 in 1986. It is a port of an MSX game of the same name, and is largely identical due to the similar hardware between the two machines. Due to the decline of the SG-1000 and emergence of the Sega Master System, the game was not released in Europe or Australia like many other SG-1000 games.

The game has a fairly standard plot of rescuing a princess from a castle, though the game itself was considered very large for the time. It also contains a map system similar to that of later Metroid and Castlevania games.

History
Because The Castle was released shortly after the launch of the Sega Mark III, its packaging differs from previous SG-1000/SC-3000 cartridges, essentially using the same packaging format as Sega's Gold Cartridge series for the Mark III, but labelled as a "Sega Cartridge" instead (due to the ROM size being only 32KB with 8KB of RAM, below the 1-Megabit requirement for Gold Cartridge releases). The packaging promotes the game as being compatible with all Sega platforms (セガ全製品に共用) available at the time (the SG-1000 series, SC-3000 and Sega Mark III), with the Mark III itself shown at the back of the box. The cartridge itself is white, the same color as early Mark III cartridges. The packaging artwork, drawn by shojo manga artist Maerchen Maker, was reused from the original MSX version.

The Castle was followed by an MSX sequel titled Castle Excellent later in the year, which also saw a release for the Famicom/NES. The MSX version was also brought independently to the SG-1000 in Taiwan.

En raison du déclin de la SG-1000 et de l'émergence de la Sega Master System, le jeu n'est pas sorti en Europe ou en Australie comme de nombreux autres jeux SG-1000.

L'intrigue du jeu est assez standard et consiste à sauver une princesse d'un château, bien que le jeu lui-même soit considéré comme très grand pour l'époque. Il contient également un système de cartes similaire à celui des jeux Metroid et Castlevania.

Histoire
Comme The Castle est sorti peu de temps après le lancement de la Sega Mark III, son emballage diffère des cartouches SG-1000/SC-3000 précédentes, utilisant essentiellement le même format d'emballage que la série de cartouches Gold de Sega pour la Mark III, mais étiqueté comme "Cartouche Sega" à la place (en raison de la taille de la ROM qui n'est que de 32KB avec 8KB de RAM, en dessous de l'exigence de 1-Megabit pour les cartouches Gold). L'emballage indique que le jeu est compatible avec toutes les plates-formes Sega (セガ全製品に共用) disponibles à l'époque (les séries SG-1000, SC-3000 et Sega Mark III), la Mark III étant représentée à l'arrière de la boîte. La cartouche elle-même est blanche, de la même couleur que les premières cartouches Mark III. L'illustration de l'emballage, dessinée par l'artiste de shojo manga Maerchen Maker, a été réutilisée de la version MSX originale.

The Castle a été suivi d'une suite MSX intitulée Castle Excellent plus tard dans l'année, qui est également sortie sur la Famicom/NES. La version MSX a également été portée indépendamment sur le SG-1000 à Taiwan.

このゲームは、城からお姫様を救い出すというごく普通のプロットを持っているが、ゲーム自体は当時としては非常に大規模とされていた。また、後のメトロイドや悪魔城ドラキュラのようなマップシステムが搭載されている。

歴史
セガ・マークIIIの発売直後に発売されたため、パッケージはそれまでのSG-1000/SC-3000とは異なり、セガのマークIII用ゴールドカートリッジシリーズと同じパッケージを使用し、代わりに「セガカートリッジ」と表示されている（ROMサイズが32KB、RAMが8KBとゴールドカートリッジの1メガビット要件に満たないため）。パッケージでは当時発売されていたセガの全プラットフォーム（SG-1000シリーズ、SC-3000、セガ・マークIII）に対応していることをアピールしており、箱の裏側にはマークIII本体が描かれている。カートリッジは、初期のマークIIIと同じ白色。パッケージのアートワークは、少女漫画家のマールチェンメーカーが描いたもので、MSX版のオリジナルを再利用している。

この『キャッスル』は、同年末に『キャッスルエクセレント』というタイトルでMSXの続編が発売され、ファミコン/NESでも発売された。また、MSX版は台湾のSG-1000にも単独で持ち込まれました。
