The FIRST FLIGHT ever of
The FIRST FLIGHT ever of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft which was under human control and could be sustained for any length of time, took place near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on 17 December 1903. It lasted just 12 seconds, but it made this spot of little known land the birthplace of aviation as we know it today.
The first airplane in the world (at least the first one which we would recognise as a plane today) was built and flown by brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright. The Wright brothers’ first flight secured them a place in the history books and heralded the birth of modern aviation. In this aviation history documentary from History Calling, I’ll explain how the first airplane was invented and how the first successful flight in history was achieved, despite the fact that no airports or runways had yet been invented to launch it from. The Kitty Hawk Flyer, also known as the First Flyer and the Wright Flyer was undoubtedly one of the greatest inventions ever, but it took the brothers years and many failed experiments to get it right. I’ll also reveal how pieces of this flyer ended up on the moon and even Mars, while most of it is now in the Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.
