Pep Boys and ACCEL are going to explain how to find top dead center on a Chevy small block which is needed to set up the distributor. The motor we are using to demonstrate is already assembled and has the timing cover on it so you can't see the timing marks, but we do have a balancer that has a TDC mark along with the pointer.
1. Get a friend to help you.
2. Pull the number one spark plug.
3. Place your finger over the number 1 cylinder spark plug hole.
4. Have your friend turn the motor over until you feel compression blowing out the spark plug hole.
5. When you feel compression, slowly have your friend turn the motor over until the zero degree timing mark on the balancer aligns with your timing pointer.
Now the number one spark plug will fire on the compression stroke (TDC).
