Walking into a nursery, can be exciting business. With so many plants to choose from, you could be forgiven for spending your lunch money on some luscious foliage or floral fancy that you fall instantly in love with.  We have all done it!  But if you are on a garden budget, or just want to make your garden $ grow even further, there are a few ways to shop smart.

Quality = value:
When it comes to sourcing the perfect plants for your patch, your local nursery should always be the first stop. Not only will they have a huge range of plants that are suited to your needs and the local conditions, but they’re also filled with qualified people who can help!
For the cost of a couple of coffees you can leave with the perfect plant for the position, but also the information you need to ensure that plant (and therefore money) doesn’t end up in the compost!
If you come armed with information about what you have to work with – your sun, your soil, your time and resources, and what you want, they can always help!

Start small:
All gardeners have big ambitions, but when it comes to plants it is often an advantage to start small. Not only are smaller plants a portion of the cost, in most cases, they will suffer less when transplanted, and quickly outgrow their larger cousins.
While you might want to spend a few more dollars for an instant effect or larger feature plant, many of the supporting plants can go in smaller. Grasses, groundcovers, and species suitable for hedges are all widely available in tubes, some of the best value plants around.

Forget the flowers:
Size, and maturity is also important to consider when looking at a plant in its pot. While it is tempting to pick the punnet of seedlings already covered in flowers, or a tomato in fruit, those smaller plants that are not yet flowering can provide better garden value. They will put energy into developing their roots and establishing well, as opposed to holding up that initial flower, which can result in many more over time.

If the only punnet available is one covered in flowers or buds, when you go to plant it, pinch them off! It may hurt a little, but it will result in a lot more flowers!

Play the long game:
When it comes to great value, choosing perennial plants that will last for years is a valuable way to grow. As compared to annuals, which do their thing in less than a year, perennials provide years of flowers, food, or foliage.

Salvias are some of the most celebrated garden perennials, as many offer heaps of flowers for heaps of the year. They are also a favourite for garden visitors – birds, bees and humans!      Planting perennials can also reduce your time and resource costs. Replanting annual herbs like basil and coriander, in each season takes time, effort & water – whereas perennial flavours like thyme & rosemary are almost set & forget!

And while some perennials might be celebrated for their seasonal flowering peak, many have a range of seasonal features – like ornamental seed heads and autumn foliage. Even when it comes to choosing things like roses, you can choose a plant that offers something all year round!

Think prop when you shop:
An important tip for gardeners on a budget, and in particular renters, is to ask about propagation when you are picking a plant. Filling your garden with easily propagated species means that when something works well, you can multiply that one plant into a whole lot more! Look for things you can divide & multiply like canna lilies or clumping dianella, quick cuttings of fillers like salvias and even those that set viable seed. And it also means that when you need to move, you can take some of the garden with you without digging it up.
