Mir Hossein Mousavi leading reformist challenger to incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claimed victory in the Iran's presidential elections, shortly after polls closed and preliminary results were released on Friday. However his announcement seemed to be at odds with partial results released by Iran's Interior Ministry, which showed Ahmadinejad leading. Earlier on Friday, with approximately 19 percent of votes counted, Ahmadinejad had 69.4 percent and Mousavi had 28.4 percent, said Kamran Daneshjoo, a senior official with the Interior Ministry, which oversees the voting. The interior ministry later said Ahmadinejad had a strong lead with nearly 70 percent of the votes tallied so far It was not reported whether the results were from locations considered Ahmadinejad strongholds or where Mousavi hoped to make headway. Mousavi expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the election and suggested he might challenge the results, heightening tensions across the capital where emotions have been running at a fever pitch. The messy and tense outcome capped a long day of voting, extended for six hours to accommodate a huge turnout. Results are expected Saturday.
