A new group of Russian recruits waved goodbye to their relatives on Tuesday in annexed Crimea before being sent to military bases as President Vladimir Putin announced partial military mobilization to the war in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Putin also announced farmers are among the latest round of Russians being drafted into the military, signalling potential further risks for the 2023 crop.

Russia's first public mobilization since World War Two, amid what Moscow calls its special military operation in Ukraine, has triggered a rush for the border by eligible men and unease in the wider population.

Men crossed the border into neighbouring Georgia on Tuesday adamant they did not want to fight in a "fraternal" war.

“I am 57 years old and I want everyone to know that I am against the war. I do not support Putin's regime, I do not support what is happening in Ukraine. I do not support a fratricidal war," said Sergei from Tuapse, after crossing the border with his son Ilya.
